Apples are the next ingredient in Jus I will be talking about. Most people know the phrase “an apple a day keeps the doctor away”. This phrase actually dates back to the 19th century from Wales. Apples can reduce the risk of colon cancer, prostate cancer, and lung cancer. The amount of vitamin C is relatively low compared to other fruits but it also has high fiber. This may help with weight loss, heart disease and controlling colesterol.

History:

Apples originated in the Middle East more than 4000 years ago; fruit have been grown in the UK as a cultivated crop since the Roman occupation. Specially cultivated apple varieties spread across Europe to France, arriving in England at around the time of the Norman Conquest in 1066; and the Crab-tree apple or the Wild Apple Tree (Pyrus malus) may be a descendant of these early varieties. The demise of rural areas and apple growing, commencing in the 13th Century with the Black Death, the War of the Roses and repeated droughts, was reversed by Henry VIII who instructed his fruiterer, Richard Harris, to establish the first large scale orchards at Teynham in Kent. Scouring the known world for the best fruit, the majority were pippin varieties or eating apples.

For the next 300 years most produce for the luxury market was sold in London. Old English, recorded in 1204, was the main dessert apple in England well into the 18th Century, being grown alongside its culinary counterpart Costard; the salesman for the crop being known as a costermonger. The Victorian explorers found new varieties from all over the world and brought them to Brogdale in Kent, which was developing its orchards and gardens.

The word ‘apple’ has many origins. The Latin for apple is Pomum but this word was also used in ancient days to describe all fruit before it progressed to Malum, literally translated into Greek meaning melon in the 4th Century. The sacred island mentioned in the tales of King Arthur, Avalon or Abalon, translates as “apple orchard”.

The Celtic word for apple, Abhall, persists in many place-names, and some towns and cities have particular associations with fruit trees; Norwich was described in Tudor times as ‘either a city in an orchard or an orchard in a city’ and in 1893 George Cadbury planted an apple tree in his workers gardens in Bournville.

Brogdale now houses the UK National Fruit Collection – more than 3500 varieties – with over 30 acres of orchards, and the largest collection of apple varieties in the world (more than 2300 dessert, culinary and cider). One of the earliest-flowering dessert apples at Brogdale is Vista, which is in bloom from early May; Idared, Discovery, Jonagold and Cox’s Orange Pippin follow in mid-May. The latest flowering varieties include Worcester Pearmain and Gala. The maturation dates for fruit span more than 100 days. Cox’s Orange Pippin accounts for over 50% of the UK acreage of dessert apples. It has an unknown parentage but is thought to be an 18th Century seedling, which originated in Colnbrook, Berkshire, related to Ribston Pippin, raised from seed by the brewer Richard Cox, at Knaresborough Hall in Yorkshire.

Health Benefits:

A paper published in 2008 by Tribolostated that low doses of flavonoid in the diet lowers the risk of heart disease and subsequent studies have focused on the main flavonoid found in apples, onions and red wine, namely quercetin. Consuming quercetin-rich foods, including apple peel may help prevent chronic inflammation, which could lead to cardiovascular disease, by the action of quercetin on the cells lining the blood vessels.

Apples, eaten raw with the skin, contain the vitamins C and E and also the compound beta- carotene, which contributes to the color of the apple skin. These compounds are also found in other citrus fruits such as lemons and oranges. A study conducted in 2000showed there was a positive correlation between lung function and the number of apples eaten per week. Eating five or more apples a week was linked to better lung function, but the paper also suggested that the number of apples consumed may simply reflect a healthier lifestyle.

Some research suggests that quercetin can protect the lungs from atmospheric pollutants such as cigarette smoke by reducing the number of harmful free radicals found in such chemicals that can damage the exposed inside tissue. Researchers in Australia also showed apple consumption may have a role in lowering the risk of asthma in young adults (28- 42 years of age)

It has been suggestedthat mice fed concentrated apple juice (equivalent of 2-3 cups of apple juice per day) performed better when placed in a maze and their brains had less oxidative damage. This could be due to the number and amount of antioxidants found in apple juice, preventing oxidative damage caused by free radicals. The oxidative stress was also reduced in mice that had a poor diet but were still fed the apple juice. In humans, higher intake of vegetables and fruit, such as apples, has been shown to reduce the risk of degenerate conditions such as Alzheimer’s.

Acerola (also known as barbados cherry or wild crapemyrtle) is a tropical fruit-bearing shrub. It is found in southern Texas, through Mexico and to Peru and Brazil in South America. Acerola is also cultivated in India.

Acerola is one of the richest forms of Viamin C (4,500 mg/100 g); compared to peeled oranges (50 mg/100g). The amount of Vitamin C varies with ripeness of Acerola. It is highest in green and lowest in fully-ripened. The best way to store acerola and preserve it’s freshness and Vitamin C is to freeze it. Acerola also contains high levels of Vitamin A (12,500 UI/100 g, roughly the same level as carrots) It also contains phosphorus, malic acid, pantothenic acid, potassium, magnesium, dextros, fructos, and sucrose, protein, fiber, lipids, and fatty acids.

Acerola does not have much clinical research since it is mainly used as a food rather than herbal remedy. It has been shown to help in many ways. The main actions (in order) are antioxidant, nutritive, astringent, and an antifungal.

The main uses are:

used for it’s high natural vitamin C

for colds/flu (for it’s high vitamin C content)

for skin care/anti-aging (for it’s antioxidant and vitamin content)

as an overall health tonic (tones, balances, strengthens)

as a heart tonic (tones, balanches, strengthens)

It can also be used as an anti-inflamatory, astringent, and cardiotonic.

Acerola is just one of the 23 fruits and vegetables found in Jus. If you would like some more information on Jus, please visit the following links.

Acai Palm is a fruit found in Central and Southern America growing in the swamplands and floodplains. The fruit is a small, round, black-purple drupe approximately one inch in diameter; similar in size and shape to a grape with less pulp. It grows in banched panicles of 700-900 fruits. Two crops of fruit are produced each year. There is a large seed inside between 0.25 inch and 0.40 inch inside.

The powder preparation of freeze-dried acai fruit contains (per 100g of extract) 533.9 calories, 52.2g of carbohydrates, 8.1g of protein, 32.5g of total fat. The carbohydrate portion included 44.2g of dietary fiber. It has 200 mg of calcium, 4.4 mg of iron, and 1002 U vitamin A, as well as aspartic acid, glutamic acid. The amino acid was 7.59% of total dry weight.

A powdered preparation of freeze-dried acai fruit and skins was shown to contain anthocyanins. It was also shown to contain twelve flavonoid-like compounds including homoorietins, orientin, taxifolin, deoxyhexose, isovitxetin, scoparin, as well as proanthocyanidins, and resveratrol.

Freeze-dried acai powder is shown to have hgh antioxidant activity against superoxide, and peroxyl radicals, and milder activity for peroxynitrate and hydroxyl radicals. The powder was reported to inhibit hydrogen-peroxide-induced oxidation in neutrophils, and have a slight stimulatory effect on nitric oxide production by lipopolysaccharide-stimulated macrophages in vitro. Extracts of acai seeds were reported to have antioxidant capacity against peroxyl radicals, similar to the capacity of the pulp with higher antioxidant capacity against peroxynitrate and hydroxyl radicals.

Freeze-dried acai powder is shown to have mild inhibitory effects on cyclooxygenase enzymes COX-1 and COX-2, and chemically extracted polyphenolic -rich fractions from acai were reported to reduce proliferation of HL-60 (experimental Leukemia) cells in vitro. In vitro anti-proliferative were also observed with extracts from acai pulp oil. In other words, it can help prevent cancer!

In general acai can help with several health problems and promote well being such as:

Lowering bad cholesterol

Maintaining levels of good cholesterol

Restoring antioxidants in the body

Protecting body from disease

Strengthening visual acuity

An antioxidant is a molecule capable of slowing or preventing the oxidation of other molecules. When our bodies use oxygen they create free radicals (a by product) which can cause damage. Antioxidants such as Jus neutralize those free radicals.

illistration of a free radical

Normally, bonds don’t split in a way that leaves a molecule with an odd, unpaired electron. But when weak bonds split, free radicals are formed. Free radicals are very unstable and react quickly with other compounds, trying to capture the needed electron to gain stability. Generally, free radicals attack the nearest stable molecule, stealing its electron. When the attacked molecule loses its electron, it becomes a free radical itself, beginning a chain reaction. Once the process is started, it can cascade, finally resulting in the disruption of a living cell.

Some free radicals arise normally during metabolism. Sometimes the body’s immune system’s cells purposefully create them to neutralize viruses and bacteria. However, environmental factors such as pollution, radiation, cigarette smoke and herbicides can also spawn free radicals.

Normally, the body can handle free radicals, but if antioxidants are unavailable, or if the free-radical production becomes excessive, damage can occur. Of particular importance is that free radical damage accumulates with age.

Dr. Denham Harman

Dr. Denham Harman, MD., Ph.D., first proposed a theory of aging as the indiscriminate chemical reactivity of free radicals possibly leading to random biological damage. His idea has had much experimental success and is now considered a major theory of aging. Dr. Harmon’s theory implies that antioxidants such as Vitamin C and Vitamin E will prevent free radicals from oxidizing sensitive biological molecules and slow the aging process. Dr. Hartman launched his theory by showing, for the first time, that feeding a variety of antioxidants to a variety of mammals extended their lifespan.

Free Radicals contribute to many different diseases. Chemically a substance is oxidized when electrons are removed or reduced when electrons are added. All chemical reactions involve the transfer of electrons. The body generates energy by gradually oxidizing it’s food in a cotrolled manner and storing them in the form of chemical potential energy called ATP.

This process can also set the stage for cell damage. The oxidation of food is like a controlled fire which liberates energy but can also let sparks fly, giving rise to potential damage. The sparks in this analogy are free electrons escaping the transpot system. These unpaired electrons readily form free radical molecules which are chemically reactive and highly unstable.

It is these free radical molecules which rapidly react with other molecules setting off a chain reaction of free radical formation. There is now an atom that is missing an electron and needs to aquire another to become stable again. This atom goes to the nearest other atom which is unstable enough to lose an electron. This atom that just lost it’s electron then becomes unstable and a free radical. This is called the chain reaction of free radicals.

Cell membranes are made of unsaturated lipids. The unsaturated lipid molecules of cell membranes are particularly supseptable to the damaging free radical process and readily contribute to the uncontrolled chain reaction. Oxidative damage, another name for the chemical reaction free radicals cause, can lead to the breakdown or even hardening of lipids which make up all cell walls. If the cell wall is hardened (lipid peroxidation) then it becomes impossible for the cell to properly get it’s nutrients, get signals from another cell (such as firing of a neutron), and many other cellular activities can be affected. In addition to cell walls, other biological molecules can be affected including DNA, RNA, and protein enzymes.

The primary site of the free radical damge is the DNA found in Mitochondria. Mitochondria are small membrane-enclosed regions of a cell which a produce chemicals a cell uses for energy. Every cell contains an enormous set of molecules called DNA which provide chemical instructions for a cell to function. This DNA is found in the nucleus of a cell. The cell automatically fixes much of the damage done to nuclear DNA, however DNA in the mitochondria cannot be readily fixed.

Therefore, extensive DNA damage accumulates over time and shuts down mitochondria causing the cells to die and the organism to age. This free radical generation process can disrupt all levels of cell function. This is why free radical damage is thought to be such a mechanism of tissue injury. It damages us at the cellular level.

The more toxic metals in your body the higher the free radical activity. Heavy metals in your body mulitply those chain reactions several thousand, possibly several million times. When a free radical hits a metal atom in your body, the effect is muiplied many-fold.

Free radicals are increased in activity and quantity by bumping into toxic metals in the body. Thus, toxic metals are a cause of free radicals. It is also clear that enviormental agents initiate free radical problems. The toxicity of lead, pesticides, cadmium, ionizing radiation, alcohol and cigarette smoke may all be due to their free radical inititing ability.

All this does not mean gloom and doom for us all. Adding one ounce of Jus will greatly help to eliminate those free radicals that may be found in your body.
